CTOnews.com, May 31 (Xinhua)-- shortly after a fake "explosion near the Pentagon" went viral on the platform, Twitter announced that it would extend its user-generated fact-checking program to images. The project, called Community Notes, is user-generated and appears under the tweet to provide more background information on content that may be misleading on Twitter. Contributors will now be able to add relevant information for the image, and that information will appear under "recent and future matching pictures".

Twitter specifically mentioned fake images generated by artificial intelligence, which went viral on the platform. CTOnews.com, for example, noticed that last week some accounts with blue authentication shared a fake picture of the Pentagon explosion, including one posing as an affiliate of Bloomberg News.

Twitter community note users will be able to indicate whether they are adding background information to the tweet itself or to the pictures in the tweet. Currently, the feature is only available for a single image, but the company says it is working to extend it to videos and tweets with multiple images.

Twitter warns that notes may not appear under all matching images because they initially tend to be "accurate".
