According to news in the morning of May 31, Beijing time, as the market capitalization of American chip company Nvidia has broken through the $1 trillion mark, its CEO Huang Renxun has officially joined the ranks of elite technology executives of the trillion dollar club.

Not only that, Huang Renxun, 60, is the second American company CEO to lead the company he founded to achieve this milestone. Before him, the only person who achieved this was Amazon's Jeff Jeff Bezos.

Nvidia shares have risen sharply recently, driven by expectations that surging demand for artificial intelligence loads and components will lead to excellent sales. In fact, since OpenAI launched ChatGPT on November 30 last year, Nvidia's market capitalization has ballooned from about $420 billion to $1 trillion today.

The company's important position in the field of artificial intelligence has been gradually formed in 15 years. Born in Taiwan Province of China, Huang Renxun immigrated to the United States with his parents as a child and received engineering degrees from Oregon State University and Stanford University. He co-founded Nvidia with Curtis Curtis Priem and Chris Malachowsky in 1993 and won the support of Sequoia Capital and other investment institutions.

The company's first major product was the development of high-intensity motion graphics processing chips for computer games, also known as graphics processing units (GPU).

By the mid-2000s, Huang Renxun and his team realized that these chips could be used to solve more general computing problems, so they released the CUDA software platform, which makes it easy for all kinds of software developers to program Nvidia chips.

Early bets have spawned a number of new use cases, including cryptocurrencies. But Huang Renxun realized that many university laboratories used his chips for artificial intelligence development, which was a subdivision of computer science at the time and was expected to support many futuristic applications such as virtual assistants and self-driving cars.

At that time, due to the low investment cycle, artificial intelligence has been forgotten by many people, which is what industry insiders call "AI winter". Researchers lament that they will never get enough math to make their ideas a reality.

Since then, Nvidia has launched a range of software and hardware tools designed for artificial intelligence researchers to develop large-scale computing systems built from tens of thousands of Nvidia chips.

It was a gamble at the time, but in hindsight it paid off handsomely. Nvidia's data centre revenue more than doubled in the 2023 fiscal year that ended in January, and the latest demand from artificial intelligence infrastructure is expected to boost its total revenue this year by another 60 per cent.

In addition to focusing on game processors in the early stages of its development, Nvidia differentiated by outsourcing chip manufacturing to partners such as TSMC, allowing it to focus on product design and shorten the launch cycle of high-end chips.

Nvidia does not have its own chip factory, which is known in the chip industry as the "fabless" model. But it is precisely in this way that it has achieved eight times the market capitalization of Intel, which was once a leader in the chip market but is now struggling in competition and dealing with chip design and manufacturing at the same time.

Although many of Nvidia's competitors also outsource manufacturing. But Huang Renxun, with his experience at LSI Logic and AMD before he founded Nvidia, and his original vision to embrace artificial intelligence technology early, made it a key partner for many of today's hottest startups.

When some of them were little-known academic researchers, Huang Renxun provided a great deal of support in the field of artificial intelligence, which made them grateful.

When Huang Renxun was selected by time magazine as one of the "top 100 influential people" in 2021, artificial intelligence entrepreneur Wu Enda wrote in the magazine: "he allows mobile phones to answer questions loudly and allows pesticides to be sprayed on weeds without affecting crops. so that doctors can predict the nature of new drugs-and many miracles will follow."

Last year, with the popularity of ChatGPT around the world, technology companies from Alphabet in the United States to Baidu in China began to scramble to develop new artificial intelligence applications, once again creating huge orders for Nvidia's hardware business.

With the further popularization of artificial intelligence, Nvidia will become one of the most important beneficiaries.

"in the future, every big company will have artificial intelligence factories, and you will build and produce your own company's intelligence," Huang Renxun said as he unveiled new products and partnerships at the Computex exhibition in Taipei on Monday.
