CTOnews.com, May 30, Microsoft recently released a patent application called "Intelligent keyboard attachment for mixed reality input", which mainly introduces a method of intelligent following objects of virtual keyboards in holographic XR space, which aims to improve the input experience of users when wearing XR headers.

In traditional XR devices, virtual keyboards appear in front of users at a fixed angle and distance during text input. Users can drag these virtual keyboards by handle or with both hands to move them to the appropriate position, and then enter text. However, sometimes users want the virtual keyboard to move according to their intention and to form a corresponding position relationship with a specific virtual object similar to the physical keyboard and screen.

For example, in the holographic desktop office scene, the user wants to be able to display a virtual screen in front of the screen, while the virtual keyboard can be attached to the screen so that the keyboard and screen can be operated at the same time in the same window.

As shown 305 represents a virtual keyboard and can interact with a virtual screen corresponding to the virtual object 403. When the virtual input device is attached to the virtual object, the user cannot input through other interactive mechanisms, such as gaze interaction and finger beam pointing.

This hierarchical positioning relationship includes anchor parameters such as distance, direction and angle.

Microsoft believes that this design can provide users with a consistent and predictable experience, and is highly scalable and customized to quickly respond to users' interactive instructions. it provides a more convenient and efficient input mode for users' work and entertainment activities in the virtual environment.

The patent application was recently made public in the United States Patent and Trademark Office. CTOnews.com believes that given that Microsoft has previously announced that it has abandoned the development of "Hololens 3", Microsoft's patent application may be integrated into the next generation of Windows as a feature in the future, or it may indicate that it is paving the way for the next generation of XR interactive hardware in the future.
