The flight crew of Shenzhou-16 manned spacecraft is composed of astronauts Jing Haipeng, Zhu Yangzhu, and Gui Haichao, with Jing Haipeng as commander. Astronaut Jing Haipeng has successively participated in the Shenzhou VII, 9th, and 11 manned missions. Zhu Yangzhu and Gui Haichao all flew for the first time.

This mission is the second mission of the manned space project this year, and it is also the first manned mission in the application and development phase of the space station. the main purpose of the mission is to complete the in-orbit rotation with the Shenzhou 15 crew and stay for about five months. carry out space science and application load in orbit (test) inspection, carry out astronaut extravehicular activities and cargo airlock extravehicular activities, carry out extravehicular load installation and space station maintenance and other tasks.

According to the plan, after the Shenzhou-16 manned spacecraft is put into orbit, it will adopt the mode of autonomous rapid rendezvous and docking, docking at the radial ports of the sky and the core module, forming a combination of three cabins and three ships. As of today, the Shenzhou 15 astronauts have been stationed in the space station for half a year, and are preparing for the upcoming Shenzhou 16 astronauts crew.
