The launch is India's first geosynchronous transfer orbit (GTO) launch mission after more than a year, and it is also a re-flight mission after the failed launch of the GSLV MKII carrier rocket in August 2021.

According to reports, the NVS-01 satellite, which weighs about 2232 kilograms, is the first of the second generation satellites envisaged for the Indian Constellation Navigation (NavIC) service. The NVS series of satellites will support and enhance NavIC with enhanced capabilities. The series includes additional L1-band signals to expand the range of services. It is worth mentioning that the NVS-01 will carry India's native atomic clock for the first time.
