CTOnews.com, May 28 (Xinhua)-- an app called Downloader has been removed from the Google App Store on the grounds that it can load a website suspected of infringement. However, Elyas Saba, the developer of the app, called it an abuse of the Digital Millennium copyright Law (DMCA) and complained to Google.

It is understood that "Downloader" is an application designed for Android TV devices, which allows users to download files from the Internet to the device, or install a web browser plug-in to download files on the website. Saba said his app was a simple file manager and web browser that did not provide or guide users to any infringing content. "if it is a violation of DMCA to be able to load infringing websites, then every browser in the Google App Store, including Google's own Chrome, should be removed. This is an absurd statement and an abuse of DMCA." Sabah wrote on Twitter.

Google's decision to remove Downloader is based on DMCA complaints filed by several Israeli television companies through law firms. The complaint alleges that Downloader allows users to browse a well-known infringing website called SDAROT. The site has been convicted by Israeli and US courts of copyright infringement and ordered all US Internet service providers to block the site. However, the website can still operate normally on the URL mentioned in the complaint.

Saba said he had filed a complaint with Google through Google Play Console and Google DMCA counter-notice forms. But his Google Play Console complaint was rejected within minutes, while the counter-notification form complaint has not been answered. He hopes to change Google's decision by speaking out publicly. "I have complained to Google, but I was rejected. please forward this tweet and contact Google in any way, because I don't know what else to do." He wrote.

CTOnews.com notes that "Downloader" can still be downloaded and installed as an APK file at the Amazon App Store or on the app's official website.
