CTOnews.com, May 28 / PRNewswire-Asianet /-- US takeout platform DoorDash has been accused of charging iPhone users more than Android users and faces a $1 billion lawsuit.

The reason for the price difference "may be that research shows that iPhone users earn more," the lawsuit said. The lawsuit was filed in Federal District Court in Maryland on the 5th of this month, accusing DoorDash of "fraudulently, misleading and illegally charging" iPhone users, charging iPhone users up to $2 more per order than Android users. DoorDash claimed that this was an additional charge for "long-distance distribution" for orders beyond the "normal distribution area", but the lawsuit alleges that DoorDash never clearly defined this scope in an attempt to make an extra profit from its 27 million consumers. Other fees, such as "distribution area" or "distribution radius", are said to be based on the amount paid by the restaurant to DoorDash and have nothing to do with the customer or the location of the restaurant. In addition, DoorDash is accused of deliberately sending orders to restaurants far away, thereby increasing delivery costs.

In response, DoorDash issued a statement, saying: "DoorDash will not charge different fees depending on the type of phone you use-absolutely not. Any allegation that we deliberately charge iPhone and Android users different fees or only 'long-distance delivery' fees to DashPass members is completely wrong. We firmly deny the false allegations in the lawsuit and will actively fight back."

It was reported that screenshots were provided in the lawsuit showing the difference in prices between two chicken fast food orders placed on different devices. IPhone is charged an extra $1 for distribution, while Android phones don't, and other screenshots show an average extra $1 to $2 per order for iPhone users. DoorDash called it a "shoddy" experiment and said Android phones use some kind of promotion or other discount, so there is a lower price.
