On Friday, Musk responded to an old video clip posted by a netizen on Twitter, in which a reporter asked him what he thought of BYD's attempt to compete with Tesla. Musk laughed for a while and then said, "have you seen their car?" And then he laughed again. When asked by a reporter if he did not regard them as competitors at all, he replied: "no".

However, Mr Musk's view has changed dramatically. "that was many years ago," he wrote in response to the tweet. "their cars are very competitive now."

Tesla has been under pressure from competitors in the growing electric vehicle market, including BYD, in recent years. Recent sales data show that electric vehicle sales have grown astonishingly. This has officially made China's new energy vehicle giant BYD the world's second largest pure electric vehicle manufacturer and is rapidly catching up with Tesla.

According to the data released by the Federation of passengers, Tesla Model Y and Model 3 ranked first and third respectively in the global Top 20 sales list in the first quarter of this year, while BYD won five of the top 10 rankings, and the BYD family even ranked second.

It is worth mentioning that Tesla Model Y rear drive version, which is equipped with BYD lithium iron phosphate blade battery, has been officially put into production in the super factory in Berlin, Germany.
