CTOnews.com, May 27 / PRNewswire-Asianet /-- earlier this week, Microsoft released an update to Windows 11 "Moment 3", bringing some user experience improvements and new features. One of them is that the number of seconds can be displayed on the taskbar system clock, but Microsoft warns that enabling this feature will lead to higher power consumption, which in turn reduces battery life. The Neowin was tested to see if this claim was true, and if so, how much impact it had on battery life.

The system tray seconds feature was one of the features originally removed by Microsoft from Windows 10 to 11:00, but CTOnews.com noted that in Windows 10, enabling the seconds display requires a registry modification and reboot, while in Windows 11, all you have to do is check the settings application. Many Windows 10 users don't even know how many seconds the taskbar can display, let alone modify the system's internal settings. From this perspective, Windows 11 provides a better experience.

If you have updated to Windows 11 "Moment 3" update (build 22621.1778 or later), you can open the Settings application, go to the personalization > taskbar, expand the taskbar behavior section, and tick next to the "display seconds in the system tray clock" option.

Neowin editors reinstalled the latest Windows 11 update on their 14-inch HP Pavilion x360 (with Intel Core i3 and 16GB memory generation 11), charged it up, turned it on to maximum brightness, enabled flight mode, disconnected the charger, and left it idle, running only the taskbar stopwatch. After running out of power, recharge it, then reboot, turn off the number of seconds on the system clock, and then test again, repeatedly testing three groups.

After completing the experiment with Windows 11, the editor reinstalled the Windows 10 system and carried out the same test. Such a test may require multiple devices to get better results, but the editor can't find another device, so that's it.

The results show that displaying the number of seconds on the taskbar clock does increase power consumption. On average, Windows 11 reduced standby time by 1.892% when turning on the taskbar clock display by 1.992%. The result is similar to that of Magi Windows 10, which reduces standby time by 1.902%.

Therefore, displaying the number of seconds on the taskbar clock does cause the computer to consume more power, but the difference is negligible.
