CTOnews.com, May 27 (Xinhua) after taking the helm of Twitter, Musk has formulated a series of controversial policies to vigorously promote the Twitter Blue subscription service. Media reports say that if scholars choose not to spend $42000 a month and not to use a dedicated API to access data, they will be required to delete all previous data.

Academic researchers have been using Twitter to analyze the spread of misinformation and hate speech, as well as the impact of social media on the real world.

Twitter previously offered Decahose API, a batch of data feeds that randomly tweeted every day, accounting for 10% of all tweets. Decahose API is available for free and for a fee of $200 a month.

But Twitter revoked all access to API last month and later told university scholars that it would need to upgrade to an enterprise-level API, or $42000 a month, to continue data research.

According to the latest report, not only can these scholars no longer access the data at low prices, but if they choose not to pay $42000 a month, they will be required to delete all previously obtained Twitter-related data.

Twitter has been contacting researchers in recent weeks, asking them to pay $42000 a month to access 0.3 per cent of all tweets for research.

Researchers who do not sign the new contract will need to delete all Twitter data stored on their local hard drive or cached in the system, and will be asked to post screenshots showing evidence of deletion, Twitter said in an email.
