CTOnews.com May 27, according to Reuters, a U.S. judge approved Apple's $50 million (CTOnews.com Note: Currently about 354 million yuan) class action settlement on Thursday to provide compensation to consumers affected by the MacBook butterfly keyboard and rejected Apple's challenge to the settlement.

U.S. District Judge Edward Davila of San Jose, California, said in his ruling that the settlement was "fair, adequate and reasonable."

The main plaintiffs, 11 consumers from New York, Florida, California, Michigan and several other states, filed a class action lawsuit against Apple on behalf of MacBook users nationwide, alleging that Apple's MacBook butterfly keyboard, introduced between 2015 and 2019, failed to provide adequate repair and troubleshooting assistance.

The user will be compensated in stages. The first batch was for users who had repaired their butterfly keyboards twice within four years of purchasing the MacBook; the second batch was for users who had repaired their keyboards once; and the next batch was for users who had replaced their keyboards.

Each person will receive a different amount of compensation, up to $395 if the entire butterfly keyboard is replaced more than twice (CTOnews.com note: currently about 2797 yuan).

More than 86000 claims have been filed, according to today's announcement. There is no word yet on when official payments to affected members will begin.
