CTOnews.com May 25 news, CTOnews.com learned from the National Space Science Center that on May 25, 2023, the Huairou 50MeV proton cyclotron equipment for space radiation testing in Beijing Huairou Science City completed its trial operation and was officially put into use, which will provide important test conditions for space radiation environmental effect test and analysis, space radiation protection design and application research. It provides support for radiation environment detection and space radiation environment application.
According to reports, in the complex space environment, high-energy protons are an important source of space radiation, and they can penetrate the outer shell of the spacecraft and enter the interior of the spacecraft, causing radiation damage to the chips and materials of the spacecraft, posing a serious threat to the health of astronauts and the normal operation of space equipment. If the radiation environment in space can be simulated by relevant devices on the ground and related research can be carried out, it will be more convenient to control the radiation environment and monitor the relevant parameters of the radiation process, so as to have a more in-depth understanding of the characteristics of the effects of space radiation environment. On this basis, the anti-nuclear reinforcement of spacecraft-related devices and spacesuits can help them to resist the harsh space environment. However, at present, there is still a gap between the domestic space radiation effect test conditions and other aerospace powers such as Europe and the United States. Since 2017, in response to the above problems, the National Space Science Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, guided by the anti-radiation analysis and testing of a series of space science satellites, put forward design requirements, and the 50MeV proton cyclotron was developed by the Chinese Academy of Atomic Energy.
As one of the first cross-research platforms in Beijing Huairou Science City, the space science satellite series and payload development test and guarantee platform is an important part. Huairou 50MeV proton cyclotron facility is mainly composed of main magnet, main coil, high frequency system, vacuum system, ion source and injection line, beam pipeline, control system and dose monitoring and safety interlocking system. The accelerator has the advantages of compact structure, small size, high efficiency and convenient adjustment, and the key technical indicators reach the international advanced level. It can provide proton irradiation conditions with energy range of 10-50MeV, beam intensity of 1 × 104-1 × 1010P/cm2s and irradiation area of 20cm × 20cm, which fills the blank of proton irradiation test conditions in the domestic 30-50MeV energy section.
Huairou 50MeV proton cyclotron was approved to start construction in 2017; the main magnet, the main body of the accelerator, was processed and transported to the laboratory site in May 2020 to enter the stage of integrated installation and testing; in July 2022, the accelerator successfully went out of the beam for the first time and entered the stage of fine beam adjustment and trial operation. The technical acceptance test was completed in April 2023. During the trial operation phase, the accelerator has successively carried out proton irradiation tests of a series of samples such as stand-alone, circuit board level, devices and materials for more than 30 domestic units, such as the Fifth Institute of Aerospace Science and Technology Group, the China Astronaut training Center, the University of Science and Technology of China, and the Institute of Microelectronics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
The National Space Science Center said that in the future, the Huairou 50MeV proton cyclotron will continue to give full play to the advantages of location and large scientific device cluster testing in the core area of Beijing Huairou Science City, and play an important role in optoelectronic and linear device displacement damage effect, low-orbit spacecraft single particle effect, solar cell radiation damage effect, astronaut space environment safety and other fields.
