A recent survey conducted by the Pew Research Center found that 58 percent of American adults are familiar with ChatGPT, with younger, wealthier, better-educated Americans more aware of ChatGPT.

High-income people with graduate degrees are more familiar with ChatGPT, according to the survey. But only 14 percent of all adults surveyed said they used ChatGPT while working, playing or learning something new.

OpenAI developed chatbots that automatically generated fluent phrases that became the fastest-growing web app in history a few months after launch. The robot has spooked educators, prompted lawmakers to consider regulating artificial intelligence, and set big tech giants racing to compete.

But who is using it? The Pew Research Center conducted a survey of more than 10,000 American adults in mid-March to better understand who had heard of ChatGPT and who actually found the tool useful.

About 58 percent of American adults are familiar with ChatGPT, according to the survey. The survey found that the more formal education a person has, the more likely they are to know ChatGPT. Nearly 80 percent of those with graduate degrees had heard "a lot" of ChatGPT information or at least heard about it; but among those with college degrees, that dropped to 71 percent; among those with only some higher education, the percentage was even lower, at 59 percent; and among those with high school degrees, only 41 percent said they were familiar with ChatGPT.

Among respondents from high-income families, 76% said they were familiar with ChatGPT; among respondents from middle-income families, the proportion of those who knew ChatGPT dropped to 60%, compared to 45% among respondents from low-income families.

The Pew Research Center survey also showed how people use ChatGPT.

Only 14% of respondents said they use ChatGPT for entertainment, work or learning something new.

The survey showed that among respondents who had heard of ChatGPT, about 19 percent said they used the tool for entertainment. Another 14 percent said they use ChatGPT to learn something new. Only about 12% of people use ChatGPT for work tasks.

Additionally, the survey found that people from low-income households were more likely to use ChatGPT across the board. About 20% of respondents from low-income families use ChatGPT for work tasks, compared with 11% of respondents from middle-and upper-income families.

The survey also showed that, overall, slightly more than a third of respondents who use ChatGPT rated the tool as "extremely" useful or "very" useful. Another 39% of respondents thought ChatGPT was only somewhat useful.

Among respondents under 50 who used ChatGPT, about 38% rated ChatGPT as "extremely" useful or "very" useful. But only about a quarter of respondents over 50 held the same view.
