Eric Schmidt, former chief executive of Google, warned on Wednesday that artificial intelligence could lead to "harmed or killed" of many people and pose a "risk of survival" to mankind, and the government needs to know how to ensure that the technology is not "abused by bad guys".

At present, the future trend of artificial intelligence has become the focus of discussion among technical experts and policy makers, who are trying to explore the future development trend of artificial intelligence and how to regulate it.

The chat robot ChatGPT, which became popular last year, has made people know more about artificial intelligence. Big companies around the world hope to launch competitive artificial intelligence products to promote their own strength in the field of artificial intelligence.

Schmidt said at a summit in London on Wednesday that he was worried that artificial intelligence would bring a "survival risk" to human beings.

"Survival risk is defined as a lot of injuries or deaths," Schmidt said. "

"in some cases, these systems can find zero-day vulnerabilities in network problems or discover new species," he explained. "although not now, this will happen soon. the current claim is fictional, but the deduction is likely to be real. when this happens, we want to be prepared to know how to ensure that these things are not abused by the bad guys."

What Schmidt called a zero-day vulnerability is a security vulnerability found by hackers in software and systems.

Mr Schmidt, who was Google's chief executive from 2001 to 2011, said it was a "broader social problem", although he had no clear views on how artificial intelligence should be regulated. He said it was unlikely that the US would set up a new body specifically to regulate artificial intelligence.

Schmidt is not the first tech mogul to warn of the risks of artificial intelligence.

Sam Altman, chief executive of OpenAI, which developed ChatGPT, admitted in March that he was "a little afraid" of artificial intelligence. Elon Musk, chief executive of Tesla, has said in the past that he believes artificial intelligence is one of the "biggest risks" facing human civilization.

Google recently launched its own artificial intelligence chat robot Bard. Sundar Pichai, the current chief executive who oversees the work, says the technology will "affect every product of every company" and believes society needs to be prepared for these changes.

Schmidt is now a member of the National Security Council for artificial Intelligence. The committee began a review of artificial intelligence technology in 2019, including the establishment of a potential regulatory framework. In 2021, the committee issued an assessment warning that the United States was ill-prepared for the age of artificial intelligence.
