CTOnews.com notes that some of these applications are developed using OpenAI or GPT-4 's API, while others simply mimic the functions and icons of ChatGPT. They claim to help users generate recipes, summaries, notes, etc., but some apps charge as much as $7.99 a week or $69.99 at a time, while ChatGPT Plus costs as little as $20 a month.

OpenAI has opened up the API of its models to other developers so that they can use these models to develop their own tools, which is a legitimate business practice. However, some applications that fake ChatGPT may not use OpenAI's API, but other unknown or unreliable models. These applications may mislead users into thinking they are using real ChatGPT or providing them with low-quality or unsafe services.

However, there are some apps that say they are not a copycat version of ChatGPT, but have their own characteristics and target users. Currently, the official ChatGPT app is only available in the Apple Store in the United States, and OpenAI says it will soon launch it to users around the world.
