CTOnews.com, May 24 / PRNewswire-Asianet /-- US Transportation Secretary Peter Boutigig (Pete Buttigieg) said on Tuesday that people are worried about the interaction between Tesla's driving assistance system Autopilot and drivers, which is a subject under investigation by the government.

Since August 2021, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has been investigating a series of Autopilot-related Tesla crashes and whether Tesla adequately ensured that drivers were focused.

When asked about Tesla Autopilot, Buttigieg told reporters: "what is really worrying is not only the technology itself, but also the interaction between the technology and the driver."

He says advanced driving assistance systems can benefit drivers. "the question is not whether they are absolutely problem-free or 100% foolproof. The question is, how can we be sure they will lead to better safety results? there is a lot of hope for this technology. we just need to make sure it unfolds in a responsible way."

According to CTOnews.com 's previous report, there have been a number of accidents in which car owners said they trusted Autopilot, which led to driving problems. In this regard, Tesla has said that Autopilot does not have fully autopilot work, car owners still need to take the initiative to supervise when using.

In an interview with Bloomberg News in Washington, US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said it was worrying that Tesla's use of the name "Autopilot" was unreasonable.

"if the manual makes it clear that you have to keep your hands on the steering wheel and keep your eyes on the road, I wouldn't call it 'Autopilot','" Buttigieg said. "I'm not talking about the scope of the NHTSA investigation, I'm just speaking from a common sense point of view. I think that's a problem."

It should be reminded that Tesla's technology is still considered as an L2 driving assistance system, mainly because the driver must always monitor the behavior of the car, otherwise the system will stop working.
