Thanks to CTOnews.com netizens, assassins, rain and snow for the delivery of clues! CTOnews.com, May 24 (Xinhua) Chinese authors made the greatest contribution to high-quality natural science research in 2022, ranking first in the share of papers published in high-quality journals for the first time, surpassing the United States, according to the newly released Natural Index data.

CTOnews.com Note: the Nature Index (Nature Index) is a database of author unit information and institutional relationships, compiled and regularly published by Springer-Nature Publishing Group, an internationally renowned scientific and technological publishing organization. It tracks scientific papers published in 82 high-quality natural science journals. These journals are selected by an independent panel of working scientists. It can reflect the global high-quality scientific research output and cooperation according to the number and proportion of papers published by relevant institutions, countries or regions.

Simply put, a paper published entirely by Chinese researchers will give China a "share" (no matter how many authors there are), while the latest natural index analysis data show that from January to December 2022, the "contribution share" of Chinese authors was 19373, surpassing the 17610 in the United States. This shows that Chinese authors made the most contributions to high-quality natural science research in the world in 2022.

Nature pointed out that China's "share" has increased rapidly since the first introduction of the natural index in 2014, becoming a leader in physical science and chemistry in 2021.

It is worth mentioning that the latest data from January to April 2023 show that China surpassed the United States in earth and environmental sciences for the first time, while the United States still ranks first in the "life sciences" category.

In recent years, a number of measures of scientific research performance show that the proportion of global scientific research contribution is changing. For example, China published the largest number of papers that year, according to a 2018 data set from the National Science Foundation. A 2022 report from Japan's National Institute of Science and Technology Policy said that between 2018 and 2020, Chinese research accounted for a higher proportion of the top 1% of the most cited papers than American research.

The Nature Index also shows that according to the original sum of all articles with at least one author from a particular country, there were nearly 25200 scientific research papers in the United States and more than 23500 in China in 2022.

Research published by Caroline Wagner, a science and policy researcher at Ohio State University in Columbus, shows that China has overtaken the United States in the most frequently cited papers. When measured by "simple literature metrics such as productivity and the number of citations, China's performance exceeded expectations," she said.

However, she added that it still lagged "significantly" behind other countries in terms of "the ability to absorb and apply knowledge", and that the reduced impact of its research cooperation with some major countries, such as the United States, remained uncertain.

Denis Simon, who studies Chinese science and innovation at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill), says one of China's goals over the next decade may be to "deepen" its research capabilities in a wider range of institutions, scientists and fields, making it more self-reliant.

"I think this is something that China is really interested in," he said. "the difference between the United States and China is the depth of American capabilities in all areas, no matter what the field is."

However, Nature also pointed out that China still has a long way to go to catch up with the United States in the field of Count, and Count is the original sum of all articles in the database with at least one author from a particular country. In the same window from January to December 2022, the number of articles in the United States is close to 25200, while the number in China is slightly more than 23500. Of the two interdisciplinary journals Nature and Science included in the index, the share of the United States is 786, much higher than China's 186.
