Today, the 2023 Innovative Data Infrastructure Forum takes place in Munich, Germany. With the theme of "New Applications, New Data and New Resilience," industry experts, partners and other guests from all over the world jointly discussed the construction of data infrastructure in the YB data era. At the meeting, Huawei comprehensively elaborated the evolution direction of data storage industry, such as embracing emerging application ecology, efficiently processing massive unstructured data, comprehensively improving data resilience, and helping enterprises release data value.

Huawei believes that with the deepening of digital transformation, the data storage industry is ushering in huge changes and development opportunities:

First, data applications are changing rapidly, with 56% of enterprises deploying AI applications, while 96% plan to build cloud-native applications.

Second, data is exploding, with 80% of new data being unstructured data and a compound annual growth rate of 38%.

Finally, the challenge of data resilience is growing, with ransomware mutating rapidly, up 98% year-over-year, and 14.1% of businesses failing to recover data after a ransomware attack.

Emerging big data and AI applications put forward higher requirements for parallel processing of diversified data, the division of labor and cooperation model between data storage and data application is being reconstructed, and the era of new data paradigm is coming. Cloud-native applications will increasingly be introduced into enterprise data centers, for which high-performance, highly reliable container storage becomes a necessity. Unstructured data is entering the enterprise production decision-making system, real-time access makes the data heat continuously increase, and the read-write bandwidth and IO access efficiency of distributed storage need to be improved by orders of magnitude. At the same time, distributed storage requires systematic innovation in software, algorithms, and hardware to meet the extremely cost-effective requirements of massive unstructured data. In addition, the growth of data scale brings serious data gravity problems, and intelligent data weaving capabilities need to be built to achieve a global unified data view and scheduling across systems, geographies and clouds. Data security threats are shifting from natural disasters and physical damage to man-made attacks such as ransomware, and companies need to move from passive response to proactive defense to improve data resilience. The increase of zero-day vulnerabilities and the huge loss caused by data recovery make the enterprise data security system composed of network, application and host security insufficient to meet the latest data resilience requirements of enterprises. Data storage is becoming the last line of defense for data security, and more data resilience capabilities will be built into data storage products, such as ransomware detection, data encryption, security snapshots, and AirGap quarantine recovery features. Zhou Yuefeng, vice president of Huawei and president of data storage product line, pointed out that Huawei data storage has grown together with customers and partners to provide rich products and solutions, among which OceanStor Dorado all-flash storage and OceanStor Pacific distributed storage have won the 2023 Gartner Peer Insights™"Customer Choice." Looking at the entire global data storage industry, the world's top five external storage vendors shipped three times as much capacity in 2022 as in 2012, which is far from enough compared to the YB data era that is ushering in. Huawei predicts that this number will grow tenfold by 2032, exceeding 100EB. While data storage is constantly pursuing large capacity and high performance, it is also necessary to help enterprises release massive data value and enable the rapid development of data storage industry by constructing new data paradigm, intelligent data weaving and endogenous data resilience.
