Thank you, Mr. Air, a netizen of CTOnews.com, for your clue delivery! CTOnews.com May 23 news, today, Alphabet's self-driving company Waymo announced that it has reached a multi-year strategic cooperation with Uber, a ride-hailing and takeout platform, and will begin the first phase of cooperation in the Phoenix area of the United States to connect Waymo's self-driving vehicles to Uber's platform to provide Uber users with self-driving travel and takeout services.

It is reported that the cooperation will be launched in the Phoenix area later this year. Phoenix was the first place for Waymo to launch its autopilot travel service (Waymo One), which now covers an area of 180 square miles (CTOnews.com Note: about 466.2 square kilometers). Waymo will provide Uber with a certain number of self-driving vehicles, which will be displayed in both Uber and Uber Eats applications. When a user requests a car, if a Waymo vehicle is available, the user can choose to use the Waymo vehicle to travel or buy takeout.

In addition to cooperation on passenger travel, Waymo and Uber will also cooperate on freight transport. Waymo Via is the self-driving truck division of Waymo, while Uber Freight is the logistics division of Uber. The two sides will make use of their respective advantages in self-driving technology and freight network to jointly promote the development of self-driving freight transport.

It is worth noting that this cooperation is a major settlement between Waymo and Uber after a litigation dispute. In 2017, Waymo sued Uber for stealing its self-driving technology and accused it of buying Otto, a self-driving company founded by former Google engineers. In 2018, the two sides reached a settlement, in which Uber agreed to pay 0.34% of the shares to Waymo and guaranteed that its self-driving technology would not infringe Waymo's intellectual property rights. Since then, Uber sold its self-driving unit to Aurora and instead sought to work with other self-driving companies.

Industry insiders believe that this cooperation is a typical case of cross-border integration between the self-driving industry and the traditional travel industry. By making use of their complementary advantages in technology, resources and market, the two sides can accelerate self-driving technology from the laboratory to the market, from the minority to the public, and from the high end to universal benefits. This is of great significance in promoting traffic safety, energy saving and environmental protection, social benefits and so on.
