Recently, the three major telecom operators of China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom will cancel or reduce their employees' communications subsidies, transportation subsidies and other benefits, causing dissatisfaction and complaints among employees, the report said. Some employees said that this is equivalent to a disguised pay cut, and some employees even face the situation of halving their income. This is in sharp contrast to the sharp rise in share prices and market capitalization of operators in recent years.

Some employees of China Unicom said, "(some) front-line employees earn more than 1,000 yuan a month and rely on some subsidies to increase their income. Are they now forcing people to leave in disguise?" The monthly transportation subsidy, which used to be 1200 yuan, has been cancelled since June, which means that the receiving salary is about to be halved.

It is understood that this measure of operators is to reduce costs and increase efficiency, to cope with complex changes in the external environment and 5G and other areas of investment pressure. At the same time, it is also to comply with the relevant regulations of the state on subsidies and welfare management of state-owned enterprises, to bring subsidies into the management of total wages, and to prevent disguised payments.

At present, the three major operators have not officially announced the specific plans and reasons for abolishing or reducing subsidies. Many employees are still waiting for further notice from the company, hoping to get a reasonable explanation and arrangement.

CTOnews.com previously reported that in the first quarter of 2023, the three major operators achieved a total operating income of about 477.7 billion yuan and a net profit of about 38.3 billion yuan, continuing the steady growth trend since last year, with revenue growth of more than 10% for the most concerned industries. Among them, China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom achieved operating income of 250.746 billion yuan, 129.753 billion yuan and 97.222 billion yuan respectively, up 10.31%, 9.43% and 9.21% respectively over the same period last year, and realized net profits of 28.067 billion yuan, 7.984 billion yuan and 2.266 billion yuan respectively, up 9.53%, 10.53% and 11.56% respectively over the same period last year.
