CTOnews.com May 22, Microsoft today made the latest 2305 version of the Windows 11 virtual machine available for free download on its website. These virtual machines, known as "Windows 11 Development Environment" or WDE, allow developers to develop applications for Windows 11 without updating or switching systems.

WDE contains four different virtual machine files, which are suitable for virtual machine software such as VMWare, Hyper-V, VirtualBox and Parallels. Users only need to download the corresponding files and import them into the virtual machine software, and they can run the Windows 11 system almost with one click.

WDE provides Windows 11 Enterprise Edition (build 22621.1702) as well as the following development tools and components:

Visual Studio 2022 Community Edition with workloads such as UWP, .NET Desktop, Azure, and Windows App SDK for C# enabled

Windows Subsystem for Linux 2 enabled and Ubuntu installed

Windows Terminal is installed

Developer mode enabled

It is important to note that downloading Microsoft's Windows 11 virtual machine requires at least 24GB disk space. Users can use these virtual machines without activating or purchasing Windows keys until August 9, 2023 (keys for Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and 10 can also be used if they match SKU). Once the evaluation period expires, the operating system turns the desktop background black, starts popping up continuous activation notifications, and automatically shuts down every hour. However, Microsoft releases an updated version of WDE every month, extending the validity period (version 2304 expires on April 28, 2023). The current latest WDE version 2305 will expire on August 9, 2023. At that time, users can activate the operating system with a real key, or update to a later version of WDE.
