CTOnews.com May 22, KDE developer Nate Graham today reported on KWin developer Xaver Hugl's work on implementing HDR (high dynamic range) support and color management in the compositing and window manager of Plasma 6 desktops.

HDR support on Linux desktops is probably one of the most needed features today, as 4K displays are becoming the norm and people are saying goodbye to full HD screens.

KDE Plasma will be one of the first GNU / Linux desktop environments to be supported by HDR (High dynamic range), and HDR support in Plasma 6 will be available for Wayland sessions, which will also be enabled by default in the new version, "laying the foundation for Wayland color management".

KWin developer Xaver Hugl said, "managed to drive a HDR screen with a wide color gamut and HDR mode enabled, while having KWin do the necessary color conversion to make the SDR content look correct. Many KWin effects have been fixed for the required color conversion, and the first basic HDR and color management support has now been incorporated into KWin."

Xaver Hugl also said that HDR support in Plasma 6 will be very basic at first, so don't expect to play games or watch videos smoothly in HDR mode.

In addition to HDR support and color management in KWin, the upcoming KDE Plasma 6 desktop environment promises to ship with Plasma Wayland by default, a default floating panel, double-click to open files, a new default task switcher, unified desktop plug-ins, better handling of keyboard backlighting, and more.
