CTOnews.com, May 22 (Xinhua) Samsung Semiconductor (Samsung Foundry) plans to announce its upgraded 3nm and 4nm chip manufacturing process at VLSI Symposium 2023 in June 2023, which will be held in Kyoto, Japan from June 11 to 16, 2023. At this grand event of the chip industry, the South Korean chipmaker will introduce in detail its second-generation 3nm and fourth-generation 4nm processes. These two new processes are important for Samsung Semiconductor because they will help it win more customers.

CTOnews.com noted that the 4nm process used by Samsung Semiconductor has attracted a lot of criticism because it is far less efficient than the 4nm process used by TSMC to manufacture the Apple A16, Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, MediaTek Tien Ji 9000 and Nvidia RTX 4000 series GPU, while Samsung Semiconductor used this process to make the Exynos 2200 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipsets.

Samsung Semiconductor's SF3 chip manufacturing process will use 3nm GAP technology, an improved version of the SF3E process, which will be used to manufacture chips in the second half of 2022. The new process relies on Samsung's improved GAA (fully enclosed gate) transistor, which the company calls MBCFET (multi-bridge channel field effect transistor). This node promises further optimization compared to SF4 (second-generation 4nm), but the company does not directly compare it with its first-generation 3nm process. It is said that the speed of SF3 has been increased by 22% at the same power consumption, or the power consumption has been reduced by 34% at the same clock speed and the number of transistors, and the logic area has been reduced by 21%.

Generally speaking, Samsung's first-generation chip manufacturing process is not widely used, while subsequent generations will be used by various chip companies. According to Samsung Semiconductor's track record, its second-generation 3nm chip manufacturing technology is likely to be used by at least one major chip customer. There are rumors that Exynos 2500 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 may use the SF3 process.

The company's fourth-generation 4nm process is designed for high-performance computing applications such as servers CPU and GPU, providing a 10 per cent performance improvement and a 23 per cent reduction in power consumption compared to SF4 (second-generation 4nm). The new process will compete with TSMC's N4P (second-generation 4nm) and N4X (third-generation 4nm) nodes, which will be launched in 2024 and 2025, respectively. According to AnandTech, Samsung Semiconductor's SF4X is the company's first node in recent years to target high-performance computing.
