MM Research Institute's report pointed out that due to the impact of price increases and reduced demand for replacement, Japan's domestic smartphone shipments in 2022 (April 2022-March 2023) dropped by 11.8% to 29.851 million units, and annual shipments fell below 30 million units for the first time in three years.

Japan's 5G smartphone shipments reached 29.029 million units in 2022, up 24% from 2021, accounting for 97.2% of overall smartphone shipments.

In terms of vendor shipments, Apple iPhone shipments in Japan in 2022 were 15.038 million units, down 10.7% year-on-year, although shrinking, but the decline was lower than the overall market average, and the market share increased to 50.4%(49.7% in 2021), breaking the 50% mark for the first time in six years (CTOnews.com Note: Since 2016).

The report pointed out that in 2023 (April 2023-March 2024), Japan's smartphone shipments are estimated to decrease by 2% to 29.26 million units per year, of which 5G smartphone shipments are estimated to be 29.1 million units, accounting for 99.5% of total smartphone shipments, and it is estimated that the proportion will increase to 100% in 2024.
