CTOnews.com, May 19, Samsung recently announced the acquisition of eMagin, an American OLED research and development company, to promote RGB OLEDoS technology to meet Apple's future extended reality (XR) head display needs.

RGB OLEDoS technology is a combination of semiconductor and OLED panel display technology, which can achieve ultra-high resolution in small size, and has the advantages of high brightness, high contrast, high PPI, fast response and low power consumption. It is mainly suitable for AR/VR devices.

At present, Sony of Japan is the leader of OLEDoS, which uses white organic light emitting material OLED as light source with red, green and blue filters to achieve display effect, and its technology still has much room for improvement.

Samsung also has long-term plans for the development of this technology, and is expected to provide its parent company with OLEDoS screens with a resolution of up to 3000ppi per inch and a brightness of 10000nit in 2024, but the ultimate goal of Samsung display is to achieve an OLEDoS screen resolution between 6000ppi and 7000ppi.

RGB OLEDoS's current technical challenge is to deposit sub-pixels densely together. EMagin develops direct patterning technology (dPd), which does not use color filters, and the company has its own silicon backplane technology.

CTOnews.com quoted South Korean media The Elec as saying that eMagin will be merged into Samsung display (Samsung Display) department and will be responsible for developing OLEDoS technology for XR devices.
