CTOnews.com, May 18-Apple's augmented reality glasses device is at least four years away from launch, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

In a report detailing some of Apple's challenges in developing hybrid reality headsets, Gurman said the company's other augmented reality glasses product had encountered similar problems. Augmented reality glasses are products that Apple CEO Tim Cook and former design director Johnny Ive want to build, but due to technical constraints, they have to lower their expectations and develop the current "ski mirror" headwear. The device uses video transmission technology.

Apple has long realized that it is unrealistic to create powerful augmented reality glasses in the development of headsets. Engineers have calculated that Apple's glasses must provide the same performance as the iPhone while consuming only iPhone 1/10 power to prevent it from overheating.

Mike Rockwell, a former Dolby executive, was hired by Apple to lead the development of experimental headsets. He has always said that the headset is to lay the foundation for future augmented reality glasses to win more resources, and Apple has only limited resources for the project.

An employee involved in the project told Bloomberg that there was a joke on the project team that the company continued to make the "hopeless" device just to make Tim Cook happy. Although Apple hasn't made any real progress on augmented reality glasses by 2019, Rockwell told more than 100 employees at a full meeting later that year. Apple is likely to launch smart glasses within a year after the launch of the first headset.

According to the report, Apple eventually delayed any major development of independent glasses products, a project that was "almost strangled" and is said to be at least four years away from launching any such products.
