CTOnews.com, May 18 (Xinhua)-- Apple has invested at least $1 billion (CTOnews.com Note: about 7 billion yuan) in developing microLED technology over the past decade, according to Nikkei.

The report points out that Apple's research and development is not going well, especially in the home-made microLED panel. This is mainly because the chip that controls the microLED panel has an area of 1% of the LED panel chip.

Apple helps push microLED panels to the ground through its mature supply chain, and CTOnews.com has learned from reports that suppliers such as ams-Osram are working together to develop microLED components, LG provides substrates, and TSMC provides wafer chips.

The report points out that Apple has designed the driver IC for the microLED panel and, in cooperation with a number of suppliers, designed the equipment needed to produce the microLED, thereby increasing microLED panel production capacity.

In a paid article published by DigiTimes, Apple plans to upgrade the iPhone screen material from OLED to microLED in the future to achieve higher brightness, lower power consumption, better contrast, and so on.

Apple Watch Ultra is not expected to upgrade microLED until 2025, and it will take several years to apply it to iPhone, so iPhone will continue to use OLED panels in the next few years.
