Thank you, Mr. Air, a netizen of CTOnews.com, for your clue delivery! CTOnews.com, May 18 (Reuters)-although BYD is the largest electric car maker in China, it has set up a new department and started hiring aggressively to make up for this deficiency because it lags behind its competitors in self-driving.

According to the report, Stella Li, executive vice president of BYD, revealed at an investor forum earlier this month that the company had recently recruited 4000 to 5000 software engineers and said, "We are not ahead of others, but we will launch various innovations in two or three years." At present, BYD is recruiting professionals in the field of self-driving in top universities such as Zhejiang University.

BYD set up an intelligent driving research unit in Shanghai last year, according to three people familiar with the matter. Previously, the company's engineers working on self-driving were scattered across departments, and the new department will make BYD's work on advanced self-driving technology more focused.

CTOnews.com noted that BYD sold about 510000 pure electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in China in the first quarter of this year, accounting for nearly 40% of such vehicle sales and nearly four times that of Tesla. However, in terms of autopilot, BYD lags behind competitors such as Tesla, Xiaopeng, Weilai and ideal. Currently, most of BYD's models use the Advanced driving Assistance system (ADAS) developed by Bosch.

So far this year, BYD has partnered with chip technology companies such as Nvidia and Horizon. Nvidia's Orin, one of the most powerful self-driving computing platforms in the world, will be used in BYD's future dynasty and ocean models, while Horizon 5 will be used in BYD's sedans in the second half of this year. This will enable the model to have highway automatic auxiliary functions similar to those of Tesla, according to one of the people familiar with the matter.
