Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, May 18, according to Nikkei Asia and Reuters, on the morning of May 18, 2023, the Japanese Prime Minister held talks with seven senior semiconductor industry leaders, including TSMC Chairman Liu Deyin, Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger, Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra, Samsung Electronics CEO Qingguixian, IBM Senior Vice President Dario Gil, Applied Materials Semiconductor products Group President Prabu Raja, and IMEC Executive Vice President Max Mirgoli.
Japan wants factories to expand direct investment in Japan, while the Ministry of economy, Trade and Industry will provide support to the semiconductor industry, Reuters reported. Yasuni Nishimura, the main participant in the meeting, said at a press conference after the meeting that Micron had put forward a proposal to mass produce the latest generation of DRAM in the Hiroshima plant in Japan, with a maximum investment of 500 billion yen (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 25.5 billion yuan). In this regard, the Japanese government will provide relevant support with the budget to promote advanced semiconductor investment. Reuters pointed out that there is a budget of 1.3 trillion yen (currently about 66.3 billion yuan) that can be used to subsidize the investment of semiconductor operators.
Yasuni Nishimura said at a press conference that Intel has indicated that it is expanding cooperation with semiconductor material factories and equipment factories in Japan in the latter part of the process.
In addition, Samsung Electronics will also set up a new R & D center related to the latter stage of the production process in Japan. Applied Materials will strengthen cooperation with Japanese advanced semiconductor manufacturer Rapidus to promote new product development and talent training.
Industry insiders pointed out that TSMC, which is building a wafer plant in Kumamoto Prefecture, also mentioned during the meeting that it would consider expanding investment in Japan on the premise of customer demand and subsidies from the Japanese government.
CTOnews.com reported earlier that IMEC will set up an R & D center in Hokkaido, Japan, to assist Rapidus in the development of 2nm process mass production technology.
