CTOnews.com Canonical is committed to implementing a new approach to managing PPA archives in future releases of Ubuntu.

Canonical announced that they have been working on new ways to manage PPA (CTOnews.com Note: Personal Package Archives) in the upcoming release of Ubuntu 23.10 (Mantic Minotaur).

Ubuntu 23.10 development started at the end of April 2023, and some new features began to show off. Julian Andres Klode of Canonical revealed one of the new features on the Ubuntu mailing list, which relates to how PPA files are handled.

Until now, Ubuntu managed PPA archives through traditional.list files stored in the/etc/apt/sources.list.d/directory and GPG keys stored in/etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d.

It seems that this method is not very reliable or safe. Therefore, starting with Ubuntu 23.10, which will be released on October 12, 2023, PPA archives will be stored as.sources files formatted using DEB822 source format, which embeds GPG keys directly into the Signed-By field of the file.

Canonical said that this change provides several key advantages, such as when a PPA archive is deleted, the associated GPG key will also be deleted, and the GPG key is dedicated to that particular PPA archive and cannot be used for other PPAs, which cannot be used to sign PPAs.

Ubuntu 23.10 will also feature the upcoming GNOME 45 desktop environment, the Linux 6.5 kernel family, and some of the latest GNU / Linux technologies and open source applications.
