LG New Energy is a new company that was spun off from LG Chemical (LG Chem) in December 2020 and specializes in battery business. Its customers include Tesla, General Motors and Volkswagen. After the split, LG Chemical will hold a 100 per cent stake in the new company.

According to sources, the new team formed by LG New Energy is led by Vice President Ryu Deok-hyun and has about 200 employees. In addition to developing 4680 batteries, the team is also developing 4695 batteries.

The 4680 battery is a new type of battery developed by Tesla. This battery has a diameter of 46mm and a length of 80mm. The power output has been increased six times, the mileage has increased by 16%, and the cost per kilowatt hour has been reduced by 14%.

Although Tesla is currently producing 4680 batteries at his plants in Fremont, Calif., and Austin, Texas, the output is small. Although Tesla can produce 4680 batteries on his own, it also relies on partners to help meet demand.

In February 2021, foreign media reported that LG New Energy had begun to build a pilot production line for Tesla 4680 batteries. At the same time, Tesla's main partner Panasonic is also preparing a pilot production line for Tesla at its Suminoe factory in Osaka.

In January, LG New Energy said it would press ahead with plans to build a plant in Arizona, and the company was in talks with Tesla and other manufacturers to supply batteries from its Arizona plant.

In March, foreign media reported that the company planned to invest 7.2 trillion won in a new battery plant in Arizona, which will start construction this year and be completed in 2025. Once completed, the plant will have an annual capacity of 43GWh, making it the largest single battery production plant in North America, the company said.
