According to Apple analyst Guo Mingyi, this year, the iPhone 15 Pro Max telephoto camera will use a periscope lens system for the first time to achieve 5x or 6x optical zoom. By contrast, the iPhone 14 Pro Max offers only 3x optical zoom.

Only the iPhone 15 Pro Max will carry the lens because the hardware takes up more internal space, but even in the Pro Max model, Apple has to rearrange the layout of the rear camera module as necessary.

When the current iPhone 14 Pro Max is held in horizontal mode (as shown above), the side key is located at the top, the telephoto lens is closest to the top corner of the device, and the ultra-wide-angle lens is located between the flash and the lidar sensor. By contrast, on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, the ultra-wide-angle lens will move to the corner of the module, while the telephoto lens will be placed between the flash and the lidar, which will provide more internal space for Apple to install the complex folding optics in the zoom system, according to Unknownz21.

A zoom lens system usually uses a main lens to take a picture, then reflects light 90 degrees to the second lens through a tilted mirror or prism, and then sends it to the image sensor. The image sensor and the second lens are placed sideways inside the smartphone to extend the focal length, which takes up a lot of space. Because the light in this system is reflected at an angle, the actual telephoto lens may need to be square, unlike the circular telephoto lens used by the iPhone 14 Pro Max. Of course, the cut of the camera is still round, but the inner lens is square. In this sense, compared with the iPhone 14 Pro Max, the next generation model does not seem to have changed much from the outside, but there will be a significant difference in the internal hardware layout.

Unknownz21 also said that next year's iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will be equipped with this telephoto lens technology, which is also consistent with what Apple analyst Guo Mingyi said earlier.
