Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, May 17 (Xinhua)-- some technology giants, including Google, Meta, Amazon, Microsoft and Salesforce, have hired a large number of low-paid foreign workers to work in the United States just weeks after laying off thousands of workers, according to a report.
Lee Fang, an investigative journalist, wrote in his Substack newsletter that after laying off about 12000 employees earlier this year, Google submitted dozens of applications to the US government to recruit foreign workers for positions such as software engineers, analysts and user experience researchers. Waymo, a Google-owned self-driving company, has also been granted a Hmur1B visa to recruit engineers. The foreign workers will start working at the company as soon as August 17, Lee Fang reported.
Other companies, including Meta, Amazon, Zoom, Salesforce, Microsoft and Palantir, have also applied for more Hmur1B visas, the report said. The Hmur1B visa is used by software engineers and other people in the technology industry. it is obtained by annual lottery and is valid for three years, followed by a renewal of three years for a total of six years.
CTOnews.com noted that Lee Fang cited a 2017 study by the National Bureau of Economic Research, which found that "without immigration, the salary of US computer scientists would be 2.6% to 5.1% higher in 2001, and the employment level of US computer scientists would be 6.1% to 10.8% higher." Authorities said last month that the number of visa applications used by the technology industry soared for the second year in a row, raising "serious concerns" that some people were manipulating the system to gain an unfair advantage. According to Fang, technology companies have hired lobbyists to pressure lawmakers and the Biden administration to expand the number of Hmuri 1B visas issued.
In a message sent to stakeholders, the U. S. Citizenship and Immigration Service said that in this year's computer-generated lottery, there were 780884 Hmuri 1B visa applications, an increase of 61% from last year's 483927 applications. Last year's number was 57 per cent higher than the 308613 applications the year before. As many as 85000 people are selected for Hmur1B visas each year.
Layoffs.fyi, which calculates the total number of American workers who have lost their jobs this year, reports that more than 168000 scientists and technicians have been laid off.
