Tesla applied last week to dismantle "multiple equipment, tools and utilities" production lines at the plant, according to the documents, suggesting that Tesla may be planning to upgrade the factory before launching a revamped Model 3.

Although Tesla China has previously denied it, CTOnews.com reported earlier today that Bloomberg reported again that Tesla is close to starting trial production of his modified Model 3 in Shanghai.

It is reported that "Project Highland" is the code name for Tesla to change the Model 3, which has been going on for nearly a year. According to previous reports, the revamped Model 3 will reduce the number of internal and external parts, improve structural strength and productivity, and increase mileage and performance.

Currently, only Fremont and Shanghai assemble the Model 3, so Tesla may initially focus its production on the US market, where the entry-level model was the second best-selling electric vehicle (BEV) after its Model Y last year.

It is worth mentioning that automakers do not usually dismantle complete assembly lines before introducing modified models. On the contrary, such actions are usually reserved for the upcoming production of a very different model. But the Highland Project will reduce the overall number of parts so that not only the appearance but also the structure is different, and all indications are that the upgraded production line will be dedicated to the new Model 3.
