"xrOS" is an acronym for extended reality, which means that headsets will support augmented reality and virtual reality. The name was leaked by Bloomberg and The Information last year, and Apple has registered the trademark "xrOS" in several countries through a hidden shell company.

When Apple developed a system for headsets, it was initially called "Reality OS" or "rOS" internally, but as the release approached, the company finally decided to change its name to "xrOS".
