CTOnews.com May 15, according to the Electronic Times, Foxconn and Vedanta joint venture in Gujarat to set up the first semiconductor plant in Indian history is still in the approval stage.

Industry insiders said that with the exception of Foxconn and Vedanta, the Indian government accounts for the vast majority of the plant's construction funds, so it needs to go through relevant procedures, including the consent of the legislature, and more patience. Vijay Nehra, Gujarat's science and technology secretary, said the project was indeed still in the process of approval and he could not disclose details and that new semiconductor investment projects would be announced by the end of May at the earliest.

People in the industry also pointed out that even if the Indian government passes the examination and approval, there are still many problems to be overcome. If the plant is the first semiconductor factory in India, semiconductor equipment manufacturers are worried about the risk and are reluctant to invest with it, which also makes the project lack sufficient supply chain support.

CTOnews.com has previously reported that India has approved a $10 billion chip plan and that Foxconn intends to build a semiconductor plant in the Dolera industrial zone in Gujarat. Gujarat is the first green smart city in India and a key investment area of India's semiconductor program, providing advanced infrastructure and rapid approval services.
