Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
Beijing time, May 15, 12 years ago, Apple's AI voice assistant Siri stunned the world. But now, in the fierce competition for generative AI, it is dangerously lagging behind its competitors.
Apple lags behind former senior marketing executive Michael Michael Gartenberg in the AI competition, saying that Apple is famous for its stylish design, cutting-edge technology and innovative consumer products, but when it comes to AI, especially the Siri, Apple has gone from a leader to a laggard.
In today's technology industry, Microsoft has soared in the AI competition with its investment in OpenAI. Not to be left behind, PaLM launched a counterattack at the just-concluded developer conference with a new generative Google search and big language model Google 2.
Both rivals are sharpening their knives, but Apple is quiet and has made little progress in the AI field.
When talking about the current hot AI competition, Apple CEO Tim Cook (Tim Cook) does not seem to be in a hurry, he emphasizes responsible AI development. Cook called the potential of AI "very interesting" on the second-quarter earnings call, but noted that it was "very important to be thoughtful and thoughtful" on how to use the technology.
The backward SiriSiri was introduced in 2011 and was hailed as a breakthrough in AI technology at that time. However, over the years, Siri has not lived up to its potential. Although the technology has improved since its launch, Google and OpenAI have put much more effort into AI than Siri.
One of the biggest limitations of Siri is its lack of natural language processing capabilities. Siri has difficulty understanding the context of the conversation and can only reliably perform simple tasks such as setting reminders or timers. Even after all these years, it is still possible for Siri to answer a question or dictate correctly and send it to the right person.
Siri only knows basic commands, compared with Google Assistant and OpenAI's ChatGPT, which is integrated into Microsoft Bing and other Microsoft applications, with advanced natural language processing capabilities. This enables them to understand the nuances of human language and react accordingly.
For example, when Bing is asked to chat about what it can do but Siri can't, it says how it sums up complex political situations or how to use it with other search engines such as DuckDuckGo. But when Siri is asked what it can do but Bing can't chat, it tells you how to start Bing, "Open Bing." Although it is true that Bing cannot start on iPhone, Siri does not grasp the crux of the problem.
Another disadvantage of closed ecological Siri is the integration of third-party applications. Siri can only perform tasks within Apple's ecosystem, while Google Assistant and ChatGPT have integrated with a variety of apps to perform far more tasks.
Apple's closed ecosystem also limits the amount of data that Siri can access. Because machine learning algorithms need a lot of data to run effectively, the lack of data makes it difficult for Siri to learn and improve with the passage of time. While people are already debating the moral problems with Google and OpenAI using people's data to train their AI models, no one opposes the fact that their access to large amounts of data allows them to continuously improve their AI capabilities.
Moreover, Apple has been slow to embrace open source technology, which is crucial to the development of AI. Open source technology allows developers to collaborate and contribute to AI projects, resulting in a faster and more efficient development cycle.
Apple CEO Cook meanwhile, Apple has a long culture of secrecy, including its AI project, which has kept it out of the circle of cutting-edge research for years. This is changing, but not obvious. Apple did not publish any research papers on AI in 2015. Now it has set up a website to publicly share about 370 papers published since 2017. Still, Google has a longer history in open source, publishing hundreds of AI research papers every year.
While Apple has also been involved in open source technology communities like Hugging Face, a place for AI researchers to share the models they use to train AI applications, Apple's participation is relatively small. Apple has shared 11 models, compared with 245 for Microsoft and 587 for Google. Apple's contributions to other large AI open source projects, including TensorFlow (a project from Google) and PyTorch (from Facebook), are designed to allow developers to run these technologies on Mac. While this is helpful (especially for selling Mac to AI developers), it is not the kind of high-level low-level sharing that the open source community relies on.
The Information reported last month that some Apple engineers have left the company to develop the large language models that drive OpenAI, which shows how stagnant and isolated Siri development has become.
How to break the game? In such a passive situation, how can Apple break the game? Gartenberg, a former senior marketing executive at Apple, gave three suggestions in his article:
1. Extend the functions of Siri beyond basic commands: Apple should invest in strengthening Siri's ability to handle more complex tasks, such as booking, booking and ordering
two。 Improve Siri's natural language processing capabilities: Siri's current natural language processing capabilities are not as advanced as Google Assistant or ChatGPT. Apple can invest in improving Siri's language comprehension to make it easier for users to interact with voice assistants
3. Open Siri platform: Apple should have done this years ago. Allowing non-Apple software to integrate with Siri will make Siri much more useful, encourage more people to use it, and improve Siri. By opening up the Siri platform, Apple can also encourage developers to take advantage of Siri's speech recognition and natural language processing capabilities to develop more innovative and complex applications.
According to The Information, some insiders say Apple is working on all of these features and plans to release a new and improved Siri in a future version of iOS. Apple may announce the progress at the Global developer Conference in June.
At present, Siri is at this level. If Apple users want to use a more powerful AI in their lives, they will have to look to Apple's competitors. Apple declined to comment.
