CTOnews.com May 15, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are accelerating the development of next-generation semiconductor technology to respond to the needs of applications such as ChatGPT in the era of artificial intelligence (AI).

According to previous reports from CTOnews.com, Samsung Electronics has developed the industry's first 128GB CXL D-RAM that supports Compute Express Link (CXL) 2.0. In contrast, SK Hynix developed the first CXL memory sample in August last year and unveiled its computing memory solution platform in October of the same year, which integrates machine learning and computing functions.

CXL is a next-generation interface for more efficient use of accelerators, D-RAM, and storage devices connected to CPU or other CPU, and is widely used in high-performance server systems. It is characterized by integrating multiple interfaces together to realize direct communication and shared memory between devices.

This new product allows the server platform to combine multiple CXL memory into a single memory pool, and multiple hosts can share the memory of each memory pool as needed, so that CXL memory can be fully utilized to avoid idle areas, thus achieving more efficient memory utilization.

Despite the explosive growth of data in meta-universe, artificial intelligence (AI), and big data services in recent years, the existing DDR interfaces limit the number of DRAM that can be installed in the system, so a new generation of memory solutions such as CXL DRAM can make up for the continuous demand for the next generation.
