CTOnews.com, May 14 (Xinhua)-- Intel's 14nm-based eighth-generation processor "Coffee Lake" was discontinued on June 1, 2020, including Core i3-8100 to i7-8700K and Pentium G5500 to 5600 and Cy Yang G4900 series.

Yesterday, Intel uploaded a new CPU microcode in the Github library, which has been updated from Coffee Lake and Whiskey Lake Mobile to the latest Xeon Scalable Gen 4, Xeon Max, Raptor Lake, Alder Lake and so on.

Unfortunately, Intel only said that it had fixed an undisclosed security issue (INTEL-SA-NA) for this update, but did not say anything about the details. Even in this month's security announcement, Intel did not explicitly mention CPU microcode updates, nor did it have any announcements related to "Intel processors."

In addition, this is the first time we have seen Intel release CPU microcode updates for Alder Lake N and the Atom C1100 "Arizona Beach" platform.

In view of this sudden emergency CPU microcode update, coupled with Intel's lack of mention of the vulnerability, we can assume that this security vulnerability is likely to be a new vulnerability that Intel has discovered internally and has not yet been made public, which is not introduced in order to avoid malicious exploitation.

This new CPU microcode update has been logged into Linux,Phoronix and is being tested to measure the performance impact of this update on Alder Lake-P and Raptor Lake processors.
