CTOnews.com, May 11 / PRNewswire-Asianet /-- textbook giant Pearson is taking legal action against the use of its intellectual property to train artificial intelligence models and has announced its own artificial intelligence plan. Andy Byrd, CEO of Pearson, revealed the news today and described how the company uses artificial intelligence to launch new products.

CTOnews.com noted that Pearson announced its artificial intelligence plan a week ago after its shares tumbled 15 per cent after US rival Chegg said its business had been hit by ChatGPT. Pearson's artificial intelligence program, which includes artificial intelligence summaries of Pearson education videos for Pearson + members, will be launched this month and generate multiple-choice artificial intelligence questions for areas where students may need more help.

Byrd says Pearson has the advantage that its artificial intelligence products use Pearson's content for training, which he says will make it more reliable. However, he added that the company is also monitoring other uses of Pearson's content to train its artificial intelligence. He said Pearson had sent a letter to stop the infringement, but did not disclose who it was sent to.

Byrd added that it is usually easy to know what a large language model (such as ChatGPT) is trained with because "you can ask it."

Byrd also tried to point out the difference between Pearson and Chegg, which is more focused on homework tutoring. "they are a completely different business from us." "We think there is a big difference between Pearson + and Chegg," he said. "We are a business that helps you learn and improve your skills, not a business that answers questions."

He added that because Pearson is engaged in the learning business, its products are difficult to replace. "if we only need to read some facts to learn, then we don't need schools, colleges and teachers."
