Beijing, May 11 (Xinhua) Tesla supplier Panasonic said on Wednesday that it would postpone commercial production of 4680 battery cores and now plans to start production from April to September 2024, later than previously arranged. the reason is that the company wants to improve the performance of the battery.

Previously, Tesla CEO Elon Musk (Elon Musk) has been promoting the benefits of the 4680 battery core.

Panasonic originally planned to produce 4680 battery cores for Tesla from April 2023 to March 2024. "Mass production is planned to begin in the first half of the fiscal year ending March 2025 to introduce performance improvement measures that will further enhance battery competitiveness." Panasonic said in the financial report.

Currently, Panasonic is running a 4680 battery core trial production line at a factory in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan, while Tesla is already producing 4680 battery cores. Musk said that the 4680 battery core is the key to making cheaper and more attractive electric vehicles, but it is difficult for the company to meet its production and performance targets on the battery.

Drew Bagrino (Drew Baglino), a senior Tesla executive, said on a recent conference call that the company planned to steadily increase production of 4680 battery cores before Cybertruck production next year. The battery is already used in Tesla's basic Model Y model.

Tesla is currently producing 4680 battery cores at factories in California and Texas. The company said it produced the batteries for more than 1000 cars a week by the end of 2022, equivalent to about 1/5 of the annual capacity of its Texas plant.

Separately, LG Energy Solutions, a South Korean supplier to Tesla, said last month that it planned to build a new 4680 battery core production line at its domestic plant by the end of this year, but did not say when the battery would start mass production.
