Beijing, May 11, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman (Sam Altman) will attend a subcommittee hearing in the U.S. Senate next week, which will be his first testimony before the U.S. Congress. As artificial intelligence (AI) technology becomes more and more powerful and popular, the US Congress is trying to figure out how best to regulate AI.

Altman will testify on Tuesday before the Senate Judiciary subcommittee, which focuses on privacy, technology and law, to discuss what laws might be needed to protect Americans as governments and companies begin to use AI in everything from medicine to finance to employee surveillance. The subcommittee said it would be the first time Altman testified before Congress.

"AI urgently needs rules and safeguards to deal with its huge prospects and pitfalls," said Senator Richard Blumenthal, chairman of the committee. "this hearing opens the door to our subcommittee's work to monitor and clarify advanced algorithms and powerful technologies for AI."

Altman will also attend a dinner for members of the House of Representatives next Monday night, according to the office of Democratic Congressman Ted Lieu, who co-hosted the event. Altman attended the White House AI summit last week to discuss how to ensure regulatory safeguards. Asked if companies agreed to regulation, Mr Altman told reporters: "surprisingly, we agree on what needs to be done."

In addition to Altman, the other witness was Christina Montgomery, IBM's chief privacy officer.
