According to news in the morning of May 11, Beijing time, as a synonym for web search, Google today showed us the future of search at the "Google I / O" developer conference. Of course there is artificial intelligence (AI), but it may not be what you think.

The future of Google search is artificial intelligence, but it's not what you think. Google is not entirely keen on artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots, although the company is developing one such product, Bard.

Moreover, Google has not redesigned its home page to make it look more like a ChatGPT-style messaging system. Instead, Google is putting AI at the forefront and center of the most valuable area on the Internet: current search results.

Liz Reid, Google's vice president of search, showed us this trend at today's conference. She opened her laptop and typed in the Google search box: "Why is sour bread still so popular?" After hitting the "enter key", Google immediately gave normal search results.

But at the same time, above them, the orange part of a rectangle sparkles and says "generative artificial intelligence is being tried." A few seconds later, the luminous part was replaced by a summary generated by AI: a few paragraphs detailing the taste of sour bread, the benefits of its probiotic power, and so on. On the right, there are links to three websites, which Reid said "confirms" the content of the summary.

This is the new look of Google's search results page, "AI comes first," and it is colorful, completely different from what we used to be, Google calls it a "AI snapshot."

It is supported by Google's latest AI language model PaLM 2 and left a deep impression on us in the demonstration. It also changes the way people experience search, especially on mobile devices, where "AI snapshots" often engulf the entire first page of your search results.

It is important to note that to access AI Snapshots, you must select a new feature called search Generation experience (SGE). Not all searches trigger AI answers, and AI appears only if Google's algorithm thinks it is more useful than standard results.

Google executives say SGE is still an experiment. But they also know that this is a fundamental long-term change in the way people search. AI adds another input layer to help you ask better, richer questions; at the same time, it adds another output layer to answer your questions and guide you to new answers.

Compared with Microsoft's AI Bing redesign or ChatGPT's new design, the "AI snapshot" at the top of search results looks like a small move by Google, but SGE is the first step to thoroughly rethink how billions of people find information online and how Google makes money.

In other words, Bard is not the future of Google search, but AI is. Over time, SGE will step out of the lab and enter the search results of billions of users, mixing the generated information with web links. It will change Google's business and could upend some of the way Web operates.
