CTOnews.com, May 10 (Xinhua)-- driving fatigue is one of the leading causes of traffic accidents. A team of researchers led by Professor Claire Anderson can quantify drivers' sleep time by measuring five indicators in their blood, with an accuracy of 99 percent.

Related studies have shown that if you sleep less than five hours a day, the risk of driving a car is the same as that of drunk driving. However, unlike drunk driving, the existing testing methods can not accurately measure the fatigue degree of drivers.

"these five indicators in the blood are closely related to waking time, some of which are lipids, some of which are produced in the intestines, so they come from different parts of the body," Anderson said.

In a follow-up study that is closer to the real world, these five indicators can detect someone's sleep time, with an accuracy of 90%. However, the technology still needs to be improved, and Anderson hopes to put it into use in the next two years.
