Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

3D artist Milan Dey created the Mayan ruins scene with the help of AI in the NVIDIA Studio design book.

Editor's note: this article is part of our weekly NVIDIA Studio Creative acceleration series, which aims to introduce invited artists, provide creative tips and tips, and demonstrate how NVIDIA Studio technology can improve creative workflows.

3D artist Milan Dey draws inspiration from games, movies, comics and pop culture to create amazing 3D scenes for the hidden temple of Itzamn á in the Mayan ruins, and shares the creative process with this week's "NVIDIA Studio Creative acceleration" program.

"I was playing an adventure game one night and suddenly came up with the idea of replicating the game scene," Dey said, "but I hope the scene I created has a strong Mayan character."

Artist Dey wants to create magnificent, detail-rich buildings and carefully carved rocks as if they have stood proudly for centuries, similar to the scenes in the Raiders movie series. He wants to create a scene with the theme of Mother Nature, so that human beings can feel the greatness of nature. First of all, the lens is zoomed out at the beginning to show the grand overall scene, in which the light hits directly on the lens, creating white space in the picture, and makes people seem to be able to smell the fragrance of wild vegetation mixed with wet soil.

Dey outlines his creative workflow later, fully demonstrating his tenacity and superb expertise.

A work of art worth exhibiting

First, Dey collects references. In order to build the scene, he spent an afternoon saving hundreds of game screenshots and multiple video strategies. The next day, he spent the whole day collecting visual materials and collating site-themed works on ArtStation and Adobe Behance.

Next, Dey scanned the Epic Games market that provides a lot of material for creators using unreal engines.

"it suddenly occurred to me that Aztec and Inca culture are a pretty good choice to create ruins." "there are so many kinds of vegetation in the tropics that the caves are deep enough to form their own organisms and ecosystems," Dey said.

When the material is ready, Dey divides it into layers to create a 3D palette.

Then, starting with the original sketch, he prototyped, tested, and adjusted the basic scene elements in the illusory engine. He tested the basic elements of the scene, replaced the basic material with exquisite material, and added lighting effects. He hasn't added any gorgeous elements yet, only a light source to simulate normal daylight.

Dey then looks for cave rocks and walls that are fine enough in the Quixel Megascans material library. After using the original material, Dey added cameras in several locations to re-examine the process of building the temple courtyard. The next most important task is to add green vegetation to the stone wall.

To make the details on the stone appear just right.

"I used a lot of moss decals on the wall to give it a realistic look and feel," Dey said. "I also filled most of the environment with large and medium-sized trees so that I didn't use too much material."

The details of the vegetation are well controlled.

Dey says that, as people often say, details determine success or failure.

He added: "when I draw leaves, I often fall into a state of selflessness and feel lost in the depths of the cave." He spent three more days filling small vegetation: shrubs, vines, grass, other small plants, and even more moss.

Dey says the scene is starting to get bigger, but his ASUS ROG Strix Scar 15 NVIDIA Studio design could have handled it. The GeForce RTX 3080 GPU on the laptop supports RTX accelerated rendering for high-fidelity interactive visualization of large 3D environments.

It's amazing.

NVIDIA DLSS technology uses AI to upsample low-resolution rendered frames while retaining lifelike details, thus increasing the interaction of windows.

"thanks to NVIDIA's excellent ray tracing, my job is very simple," Dey said, "and the Unreal engine works best with NVIDIA GeForce RTX graphics cards."

Famous archaeology professors explore Mayan ruins.

Dey uses the HDRI digital image format to enhance scene lighting, saving file space while enhancing visual effects, and adding selected flat new lights and exponentially highly distributed fog. This will result in a higher fog density at the bottom of the map and a lower fog density at the top of the map, further creating a sense of realism and depth.

The high fog makes the 3D scene more realistic.

But artist Dey doesn't take these technological leaps for granted. "in the past, we needed to manually create light reflection effects," he says. "but obviously this method is out of date and the power of Lumen is amazing."

Lumen is UE 5's fully dynamic global illumination and reflection system that brings realistic lighting to the scene.

"you can do a lot of things with GeForce RTX GPU, and global illumination calculations that used to take hours can now be done in real time using RayTracing or Lumen. I'm glad to live in such an era!" -Milan Dey

Dey examines the angle of each camera and customizes the lighting effect, sometimes removing or replacing vegetation to complement the light. He also added free material from Sketchfab and water-related special effects to give the fountain a sense of "endless life".

After the scene was completed, Dey quickly exported the rendering product with the help of RTX GPU. "Art is a form of human expression," he stressed. "it needs to be understood and paid attention to."

For people who used to be themselves or who have just started their creative journey, Dey's advice is: "keep an open mind and ask for advice with an open mind."
