CTOnews.com May 9, General Motors announced today that it has hired Mike Abbott to manage its software team. Mike Abbott previously served as vice president of cloud services engineering for iCloud at Apple for five years.

Abbott's responsibilities at Apple include leading iCloud services and infrastructure, including iMessage and FaceTime. After joining GM, Abbott will serve as executive vice president of software and report directly to GM CEO Mary Barra.

General Motors announced: "as part of the senior leadership team, Abbott will lead a new integrated end-to-end software organization focused on developing vehicle and enterprise software technologies and solutions, as well as providing digital services and capabilities to retail and commercial customers. The newly formed team will bring together three distinct software functions within the company, including software-defined vehicles and operating systems, information and digital technology, and General Motors' digital business. "

The news came after GM officially abandoned Apple's CarPlay to use Android Automative-based in-car software.

Scott Miller, GM's vice president of software-defined vehicles and operating systems, said in an interview with The Verge that he thought the Android Auto and Apple CarPlay were not the best infotainment experiences, but a stopgap measure, according to CTOnews.com. Consumers' demand for the two systems reflects their desire for a better infotainment experience, but these projection systems are not the end, he said. He believes that if they can provide a better native experience, consumers will give up Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Native experience means that the operating system is directly embedded in the car without the need to connect to the phone. GM plans to use Android Automotive, a native operating system based on Android, in its electric vehicles, which is different from Android Auto. Android Auto is a projection system, while Android Automotive is a native operating system. Miller believes that the native operating system can achieve "overall integration", providing more information and functions about the electric vehicle itself, such as battery status, navigation routes, and so on. He added that native operating systems can better identify drivers' identities and preferences and switch seamlessly.
