CTOnews.com, May 9 (Xinhua)-- Europe's largest 3D printing building is under construction in Heidelberg, Germany. It is a commercial building invested by real estate company KRAUSGRUPPE and will be used as a data center, covering an area of more than 600m2.

The building uses i.tech 3D, a 3D concrete printing material specially developed by Heidelberg Materials, which is 100% recyclable and has a carbon footprint 55% lower than traditional Portland cement. The exterior walls and partitions of the building are printed by project partner PERI 3D Construction using its 3D building printer. The building, which is 54 meters long, 11 meters wide and 9 meters high, is expected to use about 450 tons of i.tech 3D material. Printing of the building began at the end of March 2023 and is expected to be completed by the end of July 2023.

Using traditional construction methods requires more than a dozen workers to work at the same time, while using 3D printing technology requires only one large machine and equipment, with two people on site to monitor progress.

3D concrete printing is a cement-based reinforcement manufacturing technology, which is used to make buildings, houses or construction parts with new shapes that cannot be realized with traditional concrete formwork. 3D concrete printing can build houses at a lower cost in a shorter period of time, improving production efficiency. The principle of 3D concrete printing is to print out the desired structure layer by layer by extruding the concrete mixture specially made for the project. According to CTOnews.com, according to the structure of the printer, there are two main types of 3D concrete printing: gantry type and robot arm type. The gantry printer is a suspended structure, and the print head can be moved along the x, y and z axes. The robot arm printer is a structure similar to an industrial robot, and the print head can move along multiple degrees of freedom.

Heidelberg Materials says it will provide recycling alternatives to half of the world's concrete products by 2030, and 3D printing products are an integral part of its portfolio. After i.tech 3D was used to print Germany's first residential buildings in 2020, Heidelberg Materials further developed the building material and further reduced its carbon content. Through proper design planning, compared with traditional construction methods, the 3D printing process itself can reduce material consumption by 70%, thus further reducing carbon emissions. The process also improves the speed and productivity of the construction process and makes the construction site safer by reducing dust and noise emissions and reducing the use of tools.
