CTOnews.com, May 9, according to the latest analysis by the International Energy Agency (IEA), global electric vehicle sales will reach 14 million in 2023, an increase of 35% over the same period last year, accounting for about 18% of the total vehicle sales for the whole year.

"Electric vehicles are one of the main drivers of the emerging global energy economy and are triggering a historic transformation in global carmaking," Fatih Birol, executive director of IEA, said in a statement. "cars are only the first wave, and electric buses and trucks will soon follow."

According to CNET, 2.3 million electric vehicles have been sold worldwide in the first quarter of 2023, an increase of 25 per cent over the same period in 2022. IEA believes that electric vehicle sales will accelerate further in the second half of the year. The agency also pointed out that tax breaks for electric vehicles at the federal and state levels, as well as higher oil prices, could further boost sales of electric vehicles.

Electric car sales in the United States currently account for only 8% of the car market in 2022, but that figure is still 55% higher than in 2021. Globally, electric vehicle sales accounted for 14% of the car market in 2022, 9% in 2021 and less than 5% in 2020. CTOnews.com noted that global electric vehicle sales in 2022 were dominated by China, which accounted for 60% of global electric vehicle sales, with Europe and the United States being the second and third largest electric vehicle markets, respectively.

By 2030, IEA expects electric vehicles to account for an average of about 60 per cent of all new car sales in these three markets. The forecast comes before the European Union recently approved a bill banning the sale of new petrol vehicles after 2035, and similar legislation has been passed in Canada and some American states, such as California, New York and Washington.
