This is the first open and innovative pilot field launched by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, which means that China is building an international first-class fusion research sharing infrastructure relying on the all-superconducting tokamak (EAST), and working with global scientists to carry out EAST "three-shift" physics experiments covering global time zones, accelerating towards the ultimate energy of mankind.

According to the Hefei Institute of material Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, after half a century of innovation and vigorous development, relying on the four major national scientific and technological infrastructure in the field of fusion research, namely, Hefei Superconducting Tokamak (EAST), Hefei Superconducting Tokamak (EAST), EAST Auxiliary heating system, and Fusion reactor mainframe critical system Integrated Research Facility (CRAFT), CAS has a good foundation, many achievements and broad prospects for magnetic confinement fusion research. Hefei Science Island has become an important base for global nuclear fusion research.

Centering on the construction and operation of large scientific engineering projects such as HT-7, EAST, CRAFT, and deeply participating in the international thermonuclear experimental reactor ITER project, the Hefei Institute of physical Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has established stable exchanges and cooperation with more than 120 scientific research institutions in 40 countries, including Europe, the United States, Russia and Japan. The magnetic confinement fusion experimental device has become one of the national open and shared large scientific equipment benchmarking, and actively responded to the "Belt and Road Initiative" initiative. To assist the construction of related disciplines and experimental equipment in emerging nuclear fusion countries in Southeast Asia, West Asia, South America and North Africa, and to innovate and carry out "three-shift" joint physics experiments. Half of the annual experiment proposals come from European and American cooperative units, and the experimental data of EAST devices are open and shared to the world, and global partners can participate remotely without obstacles.

Liu Jianguo, president of the Hefei Institute of material Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that as a pilot project, magnetically confined fusion energy will create an ecological space suitable for young foreign scientists to study, work and live on and around the Science Island, and promote the construction of a comprehensive national science center in Hefei.
