CTOnews.com, May 9 (Xinhua)-- Activision Blizzard (Activision Blizzard) is one of the largest gaming companies in the world, with famous games such as call of Duty, World of Warcraft, Diablo and Watchman 2. Recently, the company released its results for the first quarter of 2023, which showed that for the first time, the revenue of its PC platform surpassed that of the mainframe platform, reaching $666 million (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 4.609 billion yuan), and $27 million more than the mainframe platform. This trend has been going on for nearly a year and is expected to continue in 2023.

This is a major change for Activision Blizzard, where the mainframe platform has been a major source of revenue, as can be seen from the company's publicly released financial data. Whether it was the popularity of Tony Hawk skateboarding and Guitar Hero in the early 2000s, the rise of call of Duty in the 2010s, or even after Activision acquired Blizzard in 2008, the mainframe platform dominated.

Activision Blizzard attributed the growth in revenue on its PC platform to the success of call of Duty and Watchman 2, but also highlighted the high revenues of World of Warcraft: Dragon Wings and Diablo: immortality, two games that did not log on to the console. Blizzard games are the biggest factor in the growth of the PC platform. Although Blizzard's revenue from Blizzard games is only about half that of call of Duty, 72% of it comes from the PC platform and only 8% from the mainframe platform. Call of Duty's revenue is more balanced: 59% from mainframe platform, 26% from PC platform and 15% from mobile platform.

The number of console users of Blizzard games is likely to increase a lot in June, when Diablo 4 will be released for the first time on both PC and the console platform (for the first time for the series). From Activision Blizzard's annual data, we can also see that the PC platform is gradually narrowing the gap with the mainframe platform. Last year, the company recorded the smallest revenue gap between mainframe and PC in recent years: just $100 million. This is hundreds of millions of dollars less than in 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018 and 2017. If this continues this year, 2023 could be the year when PC becomes Activision Blizzard's second-largest platform (after mobile).

The PC platform is becoming a new hot spot in the game industry, and Activision Blizzard has taken the lead.
